Abstract American is a reflection on the memory of historical form and classical materials. Several incisions were made in plaster casts of Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln. (The originals are the works of Jean-Antoine Houdon and Leonard W.Volk). Each bust is positioned on a plain wooden pedestal to create a sense of volatility, as though the sculpture is on the verge of collapse. The planes of the cuts create new flat surfaces altering and recontextualizing the initial form.
